The Art of Public Speaking and your shoes
Have you ever observed Male Top Speakers?
Male speakers were a suit and tie usually. When the tie is loose enough to allow deep breathing all is fine as the suit and shoes allow any movement including firm standing. Men dress for power, flexibility, movement when on stage. Men want to be in the best possible shape when speaking. Men want to stand firm and walk firm. They want to have a strong powerful voice.
How about the women, what do they dress for?
Women usually wear short pencil skirts and stilettos. Both reduce the ability to move by using only small steps and each takes a lot attention that could be used for other things. Why are women wearing clothes that limit themselves? When you look at their posture from side you can easily spot the tension they have to build up all the time when speaking.
Your physical balance is disturbed when wearing stilettos. This affects everything you do. When you are a man try it yourself. After that you will be even more amazed why women wear something like that.
Your ankle joints have a lot to do to keep you “balanced”. Your forefoot has to support your whole weight instead of just part of it. Your knees get pressure that is different from the one they are designed for. So you do everything necessary to create pain and exhaustion while you are speaking or negotiating. Is that what you aim at?
The tension of your pelvis and lower back increases which makes you stiff and reduce breathing and digestion abilities. Most part of the nutrition you take in through eating and breathing is used for your brain function. You are also disturbing the function of your muscles and over time they adapt to that strange situation. The tension reduces the range and variety of your voice.
You feel exhausted and can cause back or neck pain, headache and other diseases. Speaking with pain interferes with the flow of your speeches value. The mislead brain capacity reduce your ability to focus on your topic, your audience and your performance.
On the other hand proper breathing ensures that you have the whole capacity of your voice when speaking. A sportsperson that breathes properly has an advantage over the competing one. Take your advantage, ensure you are breathing properly!
With a bit dedicated practice the right way you learn to breath properly while speaking. YOU free your voice when freeing your breath.
When you know your voice you can play with it supporting your message on stage. These tips & tricks travel by mouth from one to the other as they are easily misunderstood when written down. Experiencing the difference when applying those tips & tricks is making all the difference.
